Truck Accident Lawyer Discusses Truck Jackknife Accidents

VACAVILLE, Calif. –  There was a real-life “Chicken Run” playing out on the westbound Interstate 80 about 2 a.m. Thursday morning when two big rigs collided after one jackknifed into the other spilling a load of some 5,000 chickens into the freeway.

The collision, which took place at Lagoon Valley Road, killed many of the chickens, but those that survived were running all over the interstate, according to California Highway Patrol on the scene of the accident.

Additionally, truck accident lawyers have learned, there were no immediate reports of injuries for either of the truck drivers, however, two people in a vehicle traveling behind the two tractor trailer trucks sustained minor injuries.

The incident blocked all lanes in both directions for roughly two hours while crews cleaned up the debris from the incident. Live chickens were taken to a nearby chicken rescue.

When a truck driver slams on his brakes it can result in the vehicle jackknifing or in other words the trailer is spun around and ends up beside the truck’s cab, truck accident lawyers say. These types of accidents can be serious because the trailer often blocks the road and oncoming traffic can plow into the truck’s trailer.

“Serious injuries can result after a collision with a truck due to the sheer size of these vehicles compared to the typical passenger car on the road,” said Emery Ledger, a truck accident lawyer at Ledger & Associates in Newport Beach.

Ledger & Associates specializes in handling truck accident cases for clients who have been injured or lost a family member in an accident. Serious injuries are often the result of any collision with a truck and victims should be compensated for their medical expenses as well as lost wages and pain and suffering, truck accident lawyers say.

Woman Rescues Big Rig Truck Driver After Crash, Car Accident Lawyer Reports

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The driver of a big rig truck was rescued out of his burning cab by a woman passerby early Wednesday on Highway 101, shutting down southbound lanes for several hours as crews cleaned up spilled diesel from the accident.

A female driver who pulled over after the crash pulled the truck driver out of his cab and the man was later transferred with unknown injuries to a local hospital. Several passenger cars were involved in the accident with a big rig. The massive, double trailer truck carrying cement overturned and burst into flames at 5 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol officials.

There’s no question that traffic accidents involving big rigs can be deadly, car accident lawyers say. A truck outweighs the typical passenger car as it is more than 20 times heavier. This can cause catastrophic accidents and many times more than one vehicle is involved in the collision.

“This woman’s efforts to save the truck driver are certainly heroic,” said Emery Ledger, a car accident lawyer at Ledger & Associates. “Any time you have a multivehicle traffic accident the impact can set off a fire among the vehicles and ultimately severe injuries can result.”

Having a traffic collision involving a truck driver can be complicated. Truck drivers are sometimes employees of large companies or independent drivers. Their driving time is tightly regulated in terms of how many hours they can travel on the road without resting, car accident lawyers report. They are required by law to keep track of their driving hours and resting hours in a report. If you are in an accident with a truck driver this report may become valuable evidence in determining who may be at fault for the accident.

A truck accident lawyer is experienced at handling cases involving truck accidents. This can be more complicated than cases involving passenger vehicles.  Sometimes there are multiple parties liable in these cases and it’s important to identify all parties liable in a lawsuit, car accident lawyers say.

The car accident lawyers at Ledger & Associates in Newport Beach have handled hundreds of traffic accidents involving trucks and claims where people are injured or killed in such collisions. The medical care for victims of these accidents can be costly, especially if there is an ongoing need for medical attention. So if you are injured in a traffic accident, car accident lawyers recommend that you call a personal injury law firm immediately.

Car Accident Lawyer Reports Truck Driver Responsible for Quadruple Fatality Sentenced

ANAHEIM, Calif. – More than a year after a truck struck and killed a family of four people in a chain-reaction collision on the Interstate 5 freeway, the truck driver charged in the accident with negligence has plead guilty to four counts of vehicular manslaughter.

The truck driver was sentenced to nine months in jail for the Feb. 13, 2010 accident where the truck struck the family’s SUV and it was trapped between it and another tractor trailer truck and burst into flames.  The driver was accused of driving too fast at the time of the accident for the conditions and was reportedly unable to stop quickly enough to avoid the collision. The driver will begin his sentence on Oct. 31.

“Sadly, this truck accident took the lives of an entire family,” said Emery Ledger, a car accident lawyer at Ledger & Associates in Newport Beach. “Truck drivers wield an immense amount of weight behind them on the road and collisions involving them are often catastrophic.”

Serious fatal car accidents accounted for the deaths of 2,805 people involved in traffic accidents in 2009 out of a reported 426,228 overall collisions, according to California Department of Motor Vehicle statistics. Roughly 30% of all fatal and injury accidents were the result of drivers speeding, DMV records show.

Those involved in serious traffic accidents can face enormous medical bills, loss of wages and emotional scars that can last a lifetime, car accident lawyers say. Those drivers who are liable for the accident may be charged criminally as the above incident shows, but they can also face civil actions such as wrongful death claims from relatives of the victim.

Car accident lawyers at Newport Beach-based Ledger & Associates have seen countless cases where someone injured in a serious car accident has needed ongoing medical care for weeks, months and sometimes longer.

That is why it is important to contact a car accident lawyer immediately after a serious car accident so that an investigation can begin right away before memories fade and evidence gets lost. First take care of your medical needs, next contact a car accident lawyer so that your financial needs can be taken care of too.
